This has to be the patient's choice. She/he probably wants to take the chance for a longer survival. Stewen Hawkins had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis "ALS" or Lou Gehrig's disease) that gradually paralysed him over the decades. Although he was calculated to live about 2 years (about 23 years old), he died at the age of 76. Miss P in my paper (about Miss B and Miss P), was expected to live to about 36 years, she died now at the age of 70. The doctor is only a human being and calculates at its best a probable mean for survival but he does not know for sure.
