In literature search for human neuronal cell lines, I've found HCN-1, HCN-2, SH-SY5Y, and human neural stem cells. I was wondering if there are other options and which cell line is the best to study for the functional characterisation of BDNF Val66Met.

I think the choice depends on two main factors: what neuronal context you're wanting to use to conduct your analysis; and cost. Between these cell lines, the SH-SY5Y line is probably the cheapest and easiest to maintain, and they have the advantage of being passagable. The stem cells would be good if you want to study neural precursor cells, or the effects on differentiation etc, but require more specialised culture techniques and reagents. In the SH-SY5Y line, the BDNF receptor (NTRK2) isn't expressed until the cells are differentiated with retinoic acid, but once this is done the cells are dependent on BDNF for survival, and have characteristics very much like mature neurons. I have used and characterised this line quite extensively, and would be happy to answer more questions if you have them. Hope this helps!
