What are the alternatives for electrospinning in synthesizing of an antibacterial agent using Chitosan/ PEO/ PVA precursors, regardless the form of the final product (fiber, hydrogel, film, etc.)??
You can add e.g. silver nitrate to a water soluble polymer, e.g. PVA, spin fibres or use the solution for casting of films or modification of surfaces and subseaquently reduce the Ag+ to Ag0 by e.g. UV-irradiation. Following this way we have been able to generate nanofibres as well as coatings with implemented nanosilver. Water stability of PVA can be obtained by thermal annealing at 150 °C. This also counts for samples with implenented nanosilver.
You can prepare a gel of this mixture with the addition of anti-microbial agents like ZnO or any other metal or metal oxides. Also, nanoparticles forming a core and mixture of the polymer as the shell can also be fabricated as excellent anti-microbial materials. As chitosan is also a good anti-microbial agent.
you are absolutely right. However, the charme of in-situ-generation of MeNPs is that handling is much easier and aggregation can be excluded without surface modification of the NPs.
