I used to work with a Synapt G2S (not G2S-i) and I can tell you that the main advantage of this instrument compared to the Vion IMS qTOF is to have the quadrupole and collision cell before the IMS cell, which allows to get CCS from the fragment ions of interest, and I assume this cannot be performed with the Vion.
On the other hand, the Synapt G2-S could not be driven with the Unifi software, which allows to get more traceability of the data amongst other advantages. The Synapt G2-S could only be driven with MassLynx. By the way, I cannot tell for the Synapt G2-Si !
I'm using Vion for food safety analysis. The instrument is ok I might say. However the unifi software is quite tricky to operate initially. In comparison with SYNAPT G2-Si HDMS, the IMS cell is located before the quadrupole, this will allow the instrument to obtain CCS value for pseudo-molecular ion before being fragmented (if I'm not mistaken), hence allow drift time allignment between precursor and product ions.
