The question makes one think about the existence of consciousness in animals. If animals are recognized, they are aware of the loss through understanding the consequences. If we assume that animals have no consciousness, then the loss of a close creature for them is only a complication of survival.
I doubt animals put the same values on things or contemplate necessarily time and loss. Elephants appear to grieve and recognise skeletons as dead companions but that does not need to go any further.
A great deal of human society seems to do nonetheless with memorialising the dead and through that we have gained a concept of the past and temporality.

We don't know whether animals are emotionally unattached. But any living thing that is loved gets emotionally attached

I think that animals instinctively know that, and there are some organisms such as ants, for example, the dead individuals have a certain smell and the rest know that they are dead.
From my family experience. My cousin Connie Hoskinson has a Harry Terrier dog, Sydney, who was deeply saddened twice: when George's husband George died, and then when the second dog, Angel, brought home when Sydney was 13, died after being exposed. For a sudden severe heart attack. Without his companion, his dog, who slept with him and spent weeks looking for him at home, Sydney was eating less than usual, losing weight, and not long before he died in his sleep.
We are taught that once someone dies they would never be back. Who teaches this to animals? How would a monkey know that his mother is dead?
The crux of death is permanent separation. Human beings or animals learn the meaning of death when they actually / personally experienced it.

I wonder who teaches them , I am sure they know by nature that one someone leaves they are not going to come back and they move on easily unlike us who know (I think) the depths of attachments .
