Our brains have got jammed with knowledge we had gained from schooling. We learn newton, Rutherford, bohr without understanding the research which blocks our mind to think beyond. Opinions?
Learning mathematics structures our mind, its way of solving problems can be used to face real-life problems, or it gives us a language to describe concepts, theories, developments or results of different branches of science, technology, economics, .. Algebra gives structural support, systematization or demonstration methodology. Geometry opens our mind to reason things from the spatial perspective. Mathematical analysis, its concepts or results, is key in the development of mathematical models to describe or predict the behavior of elements of our world. And so, we could continue describing the role played by the different branches of mathematics in human thought, the development of knowledge or the interpretation of the world. For all this, mathematical knowledge, along with that of other disciplines such as literature, philosiphy or history, for example, must be part of the general culture that should promote a quality education system.

Since all mathematical patterns are subject to logic, studying and learning about patterns in Maths will indeed have some effect on your overall logical thinking abilities. If you'd like to improve general logic abilities, then try a more general field of Maths.
