Various articles and books have discussed the range of Visual Literacy skills necessary for today's children to navigate safely and confidently the increasingly visual world they live in. Have you come across any specific publication that you would like to put forward as seminal in this area? If so, which one, and why?

I personally believe that the attached article deserves particular attention for several reasons. For one thing, it adopts a critical stance on the paradigm of visual literacy (VL) stating that the semiotic bases of the construct needs to be clearly defined ; otherwise, it cannot be operationalized and activated in the educational contexts. Another thing is that the curricula developers need to consider a a skill-based approach to VL by giving it a central rather than a peripheral role in the curriculum. In addition, it places a high premium on teacher training and teacher preparation by arguing that striving for a deeper understanding of images in today’s world requires a carefully designed professional development program for the targeted teachers. Finally, it suggests that VL can best attain its goals through adopting an art based approach since the world of arts permeates all aspects of human life such as creativity, critical thinking , cultural identity, etc. so much so it is virtually difficult to separate art images from non-art ones in the present day and age.
