For the past 20 years I have been researching and publishing on the assessment of the VL skills (operationally defined via my PhD thesis) through my instrument, the VL Index. During this time, many studies across the globe have utilised the Index to assess the VL skills of the study participants for a variety of instructional and training purposes. It's time however to begin the revision of the instrument in order to address the learning, training, work, and citizenship needs of the 21st century. Within that context, please suggest VL abilities that your practice and research on this topic has demonstrated as necessary and/or critical for this century. In addition, feel free to recommend ways on how the assessment/measurement of these abilities could be implemented for the different education levels, and their populations.
Visual Literacy abilities could be measured by collecting data on recall and acuity of visual elements. This could be done by asking participants in a study to view any visual material, films, websites or photos.
An important component of Visual Literacy that should be considered is Visual Language. This can be object language and body language. These can be assessed via the above mentioned materials as well as using reality since the Visual Language exists in two dimensions and three. It is also temporal or nontemporal.
