Hello. I´m searching for university campuses all around the "east" part of the Europe, which were built in totalitarianism. Can anyone suggest valuable university campuses from the postcommunist countries, like Romania, or for istance Czech republic? My main research interest is focused on sustainable multifunctional component of the city urbanized area. Method of the doctoral thesis is based on research by design applied on main university campus of Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra.
Just out of my personal curiosity, are you including the former Yugoslavia in your study?
One more question: what do you count as the period of totalitarianism? As far as I can tell, this is hardly a settled question. The German political theorist Hannah Arendt, for instance, says that totalitarianism ended in 1953 with the death of Stalin. What is your criteria of totalitarianism?
Brian Smith first of all it depends where (in which country) we can talk about totalitarianism. For instance in Romania it ended up in 1989 regardless of what Arendt said. But in global my interest goes to any other countries (of course included Romania) where totalitarianism was connected with socialism or communism. But! For example editor Ján Čulík argues that the Communist regime committed terror mainly during the first years of its existence, but later it was liberalized. On this basis, we can say the Communist regime does not include totalitarianism. So it is very hardly grasp but I will answer your question: I am mainly looking for countries which had socialism or communism and we call them totalitarian states or postcommunist states and partially agree with the view above.
I didn't mean to come off as a disciple of Arendt! I was just saying that different theorists have different conceptions of what totalitarianism is. There is substantial disagreement in political theory about what totalitarianism is.
