I would like to ask whether JC-1 (CBIC2) is suitable for bacterial staining as a mitochondrial membrane potential probe?
It is known that it is often used for eukaryotic cell mitochondrial detection.
I am curious whether there is a transmembrane potential response in bacteria (such as E. coli), or whether special treatment is required (such as optimization of membrane permeation conditions)?

Bacteria, as prokaryotes, lack membrane organelles such as mitochondria in their cell structure, and JC-1 (CBIC2) is traditionally used to detect the mitochondrial membrane potential of eukaryotic cells.
It is worth noting that the literature (PMID: 38232278) shows that JC-1 can be used to monitor changes in mitochondrial membrane potential caused by bacterial infection of host cells, but direct staining of bacteria itself may have limited effect due to the lack of target sites.
