Today, we have the record of pre-existing life, the fossil record. There is no need for theories as the record shows the progression of life from microscopic algae through invertebrates into vertebrates and humans.

Society learned a bit about it from "Jurassic Park", but geologists know all the details which anyone can find and study on the internet.

Yes fossils show that since the Cambrian period, the beginning of the primary era, living beings on earth became more and more complex with the appearance and disappearance of a very large number of plant and animal species. Living beings flourished during given geological times, some disappear, while others survive to the present day.

in addition to molecular biology, we have similarities in genetic material that allows us to establish genealogical trees similar to those obtained by fossils. The question is the mechanism of evolution ... that was the goal of Darwin's work.

Darwin's theory is the core of evolutionary studies. Although some workers have proposed contradictory hypotheses from time to time, I will say confidently that modern biological discoveries and innovations have only strengthened the laws of evolution proposed by Darwin.

Biologists appreciate evolution as a fact, a natural process operating on all life forms, form viruses to us. But we do not (yet) know all the details of variations and speciation that we still need to employ the theory to explain the minute details. For example, natural selection is very powerful in understanding diseases, pathogens and their management.
