The progressive shortening of telomeres is recognized by the cell like a DNA damage and, by consequence, active p53-mediated apoptosis. In cells that have lost p53, the replication continues for a time and the shortening of telomeres too. If the telomerase enzyme is not activated during this time, the cell will die. This death is by apoptosis, in a manner independent of p53, or this death is by necrosis?
