LaTex is the main tool for writing academic texts and it will be use for a long time, also you can easily use tools such as pandadoc or markdown where you can auto-convert plain text in markdown to LaTeX for further processing.

You can also use LyX as a LaTeX frontend. Hardly it's correct to call an extra layer as a lighter alternative, rather easier to use in simple cases.

I am still a loyal user of WordPerfect, which has a good formula editor built in.

If you are comfortable with LaTeX, then why think of other tools? LaTeX, the best.

LaTeX is the best when it comes to scientific writing be it an article, book or a poster. You have packages that make your job easier. You don't need to worry about formatting, aligning your text or anything trivial. I have helped out a bit in creating content for a book, it felt good when I saw the output in PdfLaTeX.

Why would you write a book with Latex if it's not a scientific paper.

Books can be written in other tools.

First you have to read out many book yourself.
