Sometimes it is difficult to see small-scale sedimentary structures in the field?

Sometimes it is difficult to see small-scale sedimentary structures in the field, because all have the same colour. This are more easily seen on thin sections.

I have never tried it or heard of any way of how to see such structures in the field, except throwing water on the cliffs. Maybe UV-light or a stroboscope?

Any suggestions? What have I missed?
