I always avoid using iodine-based drugs, even on the skin, because if the histological examination detects cancer and the patient should perform a total body scintigraphic scan, iodine may interfere on detecting metastases.
J agree with the collegagues also us avoid betadine solutions and iodine-based drugs as if the histological examination detects differentiated cancer and we must a total body scintigraphy scan, iodine may interfere on detecting metastases
Sorry for incompletely sent answer. I would like to continue here. So when thyroid malignancy is suspected thyroid scan might be misleading due to previously used iodine as gets absorbed through skin also.
It should be avoided also in the skin. It can contaminate the wound and would eventually interfere with scintigraphic scans.
However, we no longer use iodine solutions as skin antiseptic for neck surgery. Clorhexidine is better, although contact with mucosa should be avoided. Therefore we do not use in in the face but it is perfect for thyroid surgery.
I agree all of the above , but Iodine containing antiseptics should also be avoided for yourself, especailly if you are in the theatre everythey and washing your hands several times a day, we had showed that surgeans could get excesive amounts of iodine transdermally...........
