We are isolation total RNA either by using TRIZOL (Invitrozen, USA) or by RNeasy plant mini kit (Qiagen). See our reference for further clarification.

I use Z6-extraction buffer (8 m guanidinium-HCl, 20 m m MES, 20 m m EDTA, 50 m mβ-mercaptoethanol, pH 7.5) in combination with phenol extraction and the kit from ROCHE (upper phase and equal roche kit binding buffer after centrifugation) and works well with all type of plants. I don't recommend Qiagen common kit alone in any plant with the exception of Arabidopsis.
