For desalination membrane technology is a common practice. Recently National Institute of Ocean Technology has successfully established Low Temperature Thermal desalination plant (LTTD) for the conversion of sea water to fresh water for drinking purpose. This method is natural, the discharge effluents not containing more salt, ultimately no impact on marine environment, not costing more for maintenance like membrane technology plant. what is your opinion or experience?
With the exception of Guantanoma Bay Cuba facilities, there are no thermal technologies in use for purposes of drinking water nor wastewater treatment in the United States, its Territories or Commonwealths. Incidentally Guantanoma Bay is being converted or has been converted to synthetic membrane processes. The use of synthetic membrane processes is well documented in the USA and hence the answer is obvious.
I think that reverse osmosis is the best technology. Because of energy consumption. Thermal methods need more energy, as every kilogram of water should be first evaporate and then condensate.
All processes produce good quality water. The thermal methods consume more energy which is one reason of why the RO processes are used more and more. But if there is cheap energy available, an economic analysis must be made to evaluate which type of process is more suitable.
