I was found this expression in a PhD thesis:"Compared with other spray techniques, the electrostatic spray deposition technique has
been used only recently for thin film deposition, whereas liquid atomization by means of an electric field has been investigated for many years."
one can give a clear explanation about the difference between electrostatic spray and the atomisation by means of an electrical field ?!!!
It seems for me to be the same thing, am i wrong !
Could you post a link to the Thesis you mention? That would help clarify.
I think it means that in spray painting the potential is primarily between the spray source and the target. In electrostatic atomisation the potential is highly non- linear and arranged to ionise and throw the fluid molecules away from the atomiser. Where they go is another matter altogether.
They are different.
Electrostatic spray means that you charge the (conductive) droplets e.g. by electrode at high voltage. During the charging, you may or may not break them into smaller droplets, depending on Rayleigh critical radius. The non-neutral droplets are then accelerated by electric field.
Liquid atomization with electric field: you apply electric field to neutral (possibly non-conductive) droplets. Due to the difference of the dielectric permittivity of the droplet and the medium, the droplet polarizes, deforms and above certain field-dependent critical radius it breaks into smaller droplets.
