Defect in a semiconductor can cause to some different effects such as creation magnetic moment for dangling bonds of atoms that are situated near the defect. Also, defect play a role as a perturbation origin for energy levels and cause to disappearing degeneracy, so the energy band gap decreases or compound become a metal.
In the other hand, Sometimes defect in a semiconductor create some localized states above the Fermi level due to dangling bonds of defect area, so here the energy band gap decreases.
Or maybe some phenomena that I do not know about them.
