Good day,

Does anyone have any experience with the purification of commercial glutaraldehyde (GA) using activated charcoal?

I am currently using the method as described by:

Anderson 1967. PURIFICATION AND QUANTITATION OF GLUTARALDEHYDE AND ITS

EFFECT ON SEVERAL ENZYME ACTIVITIES IN SKELETAL MUSCLE. The Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry.

Accordingly, commercial GA is mixed with 20 % (w/v) activated charcoal and then vacuum filtered. The filtrate is again mixed with 20 % (w/v) charcoal and filtered. The process is repeated four times in total. The absorbance of the end product (final filtrate) is measured at absorbance 280 nm and 235 nm. The acceptance criteria for having purified (monomeric GA) is that the ratio of absorbance 280/235nm should be >1.5.

The method does not seem to work. I am using alkaline steam activated charcoal with a high surface area. Am I missing something? Any assistance would be much appreciated.
