With number of my colleagues, we have frequent discussions and dilemmas what will be more significant for the "scientific score" of one researcher in the near future: number of publications in journals with a high impact factor or a greater citation scores (excluding self-citations). The question arises because it become more difficult (long reviewing procedure, high price if open access or sometime requests for extremely dramatic changes of the original paper and idea) to publish in journals with a higher impact factor (> 3.0 for geosciences for example), while some researchers have a very high citation score, even though most of its papers have not been published in well-recognized high-impact factor scientific journals. What would be a good recommendation especially for young scientists?
