Which is the simplest way to remove vegetation from drone based digital elevation model (DEM), or how to prepare digital terrain model from drone-based DEM?
Do you have any experience how to make that reasonably simple?

I think you should create a point cloud from DEM, then use Lastools or lidR to calculate digital terrain model (DTM). Have a look at this link https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/63396/how-to-create-a-point-cloud-from-dem.
