Does PD-1 have to be expressed during the activation of T cells?
In other words, is it possible that T cells without the expression of PD-1 are already primed/activated?

yes of course T cell can activate without PD-1
PD-1 is an inhibitory receptor, not the activator
its like CTLA-4
PD-1 when bound PD-L1 signalling end the activation of T cell

knockout mice PD-1 negative suffer from died after 3 to 4 wk due to lymphoproliferative disease?
thats means without PD-1 no break for T cell activation
