Dear Professor Ljubomir Jacić, I joined RG about 2 months back. I am actively involved in the sense of interacting with young researchers to the level of helping them by providing feedback, suggestions and guidance. Learning from senior researchers from their opinions, experiences and debates.

Dr. Ljubomir Jacić , for a young graduate student , research gate provide a platform to learn,share our thought and knowledge and also gives us a chance to interact with scientist and scholars all over the world.

RG is interesting. My students use this cite much more than me. However, I find that senior researchers do not have sufficient time to be active in RG, LinkedIn and other social/academic media. There has been some doubts raised over the basis on which RG score is calculated and it may be a cause for absence or senior researchers. However, I find that my students are benefiting a lot from RG membership. They are posing questions and getting solutions to them from experts around the world. In one sense that is good, but in another sense that is a short-cut. There are both good and bad sides. It all depends on how one uses it.

Hi all

One of the self satisfaction for researchers is their paper was read and cited by others in the field. I think beside ResearcherID, Google Scholar, Academia, LiveDNA ... Researchgate is one the the way to monitor this index and communicate among researchers.

The question on how many was active is hard to answer, since the term active itself must have clear rubric or definition.

Overall, I believe Researchgate doing good job to share and connect among researchers and Scientist.

Quite a few, if you compare with the social sites....

I think this platform is useful to an active reseacher.

The major feature is that RG has s space to broadcast your papers and its relations with other publications. With more active members in the community it will become a powerfull tool to do your reviews, you may be able to easy find papers and its references and other papers which extends the work, and for this a huge and active community is required.

I think adding publications is not an active participation. I have already written on https://www.researchgate.net/post/What_is_the_scientific_impact_of_a_paper_How_can_it_be_measured_How_can_researchers_be_assessed_properly that real RG activity can be a good measure of scientific activity because 1. asking good questions and answering, commenting rightly are individual (not collective) performances, 2. the time for reflecting to a reply are briefer so this can explain better the abilities of a participant, 3. the participants must have some courage showing their knowledge, weaknesses and style, this transparency may be risky 4. one works in most cases for nothing but can find people with interesting characters.

I think that RG provides a good service to researchers. We can find people interested in our prefered topics. I can know whether or not a publication is downloaded or up-voted. Even you can make friends and share questions. In addition, it is for free.

In addition to previous comments which I agree on most of them, I liked the idea to connect with some authors that I highly appreciate their works and cited their publications in my papers,

I joined ResearchGate at the beginning of this year with the idea to share (in the form of interesting, striking and even a little "provocative":) questions, answers and lively discussionсs) my own philosophy about circuitry... and thus to verify its correctness. I was doing this since 2002 on my website of circuit-fantasia.com, Wikipedia and Wikibooks... but I was not satisfied because I had no satisfactory feedback from web visitors. I also thought to do it in various electronics forums, but their narrow-mindedness and anonymity restrained me...

But to be completely honest, I will say that I am not satisfied with the activity of the participants in ResearchGate. In practice, there are little people who regularly participate in discussions on fundamental circuit ideas in electronics. My impression is that there are many basic scientists, but less of RG participitants are skilled in the circuitry...

Another "RG phenomenon" is that there is no good connection between us (engineers teaching in universities and technical schools) and specialists in the field of humanities (psychologists, sociologists, "pure" educators, didacts....) For example, a real mystery for me remained why none of the members from the groups Education (68,976 members), Teaching (6796 members), and Engineering Education (6,075 members) have not supported my initiative above to give a chance to my students to join RG discussions. I wonder because is there something more important than to wake up the (innate human) curiosity in these young people?

I agree that RG gave me the opportunity to show my research profile world-wide...and I am so much active here...:)

RG can be very useful in creating new contacts, discussing interesting topics etc., but not all member participate actively: some only create a profile but do not participate in discussions, do not ask questions. do not follow others etc.: maybe they don't even know what they could do here, or don't have time or don't care... but maybe some will become more active in the future.

Well, I will add another biting remark to passive members of RG... to make this discussion more interesting and hot...

I think it does no honor to anyone to place great articles and papers on a given subject (especially with many young co-authors)... and then he/she can not say a word on this topic in the discussions... agree that it makes a quite strange impression and gives rise to various assumptions...

RG is helpful for both lecturers and students. Those that are active should probably try to recommended to their colleagues emphasizing the benefits of participating. When some questions are not answered one can rephrase them or consider different selection of topics. Who knows it might work with different type of researches.

I am saying honestly that RG is very much beneficial for me and my research work.

Some time I need some cross references / old references, those, any how I am unable to download at present institute.

So I get these references with the help of my friends on RG, they always help me and also I get latest / updated information's in my research.

Hi Ljubomir and friends, I haven't been active till lately when I realized that RG is part of Professional Development. Then only, I posted questions that get stuck on my mind and posted responses to other people's questions within my field.

When I came back from conferences, I added my proceedings. I up-voted so many responses because I believe in being fair; and my RG score decreased. That's still bearable, fine. Then suddenly just recently, I got a message from Community Support asking me 'kindly' to be careful about what I posted! Around that time, someone down-voted my question. I wished they are more courageous and honest, and sent me a message about what I did that offended them. I'm open to improvement :)

Dear Miranda Yeoh, We all are 100% agreeying with your views. Let us talk about remedies. RG management exist and carefully analyzes the problems and provides solutions. RG evaluation and evaluation is also like the other systems of the world which can provide perfect judgement.

Now come to issue.

Since who down votes is kept un known (may be seriously or may not be seiously acted upon). Check this question 1 down vote what it reflects??? I was following one question "Which skills must 21st century teachers have to promote high quality learning?" which received 48 up votes and 3 down with1024 answers and 15784 views.Those who dont want to debate or not transparent or biased mind they do this tacts if they are strong they should positively debate.

RG management should look into this issue: Respected Ljubomir Jacić is deputed from our side (the followerof this question) to write to RG for remedial action.

Ljubomir, I think that as your questions are asked, they can not be classified as bad. The negative vote here does not make sense and is perhaps more a reflection of a personal attitude while the positive vote makes sense because approves the use of the questions.

In this regard, I want to make a suggestion to all actively involved in these discussions:

Dear colleagues, when you see a negative vote and you do not agree with it, express your opinion by an opposite positive vote. This will neutralize to some extent the negative vote... and the more members do that, the better this "neutralization" will be. So, my point is that while there is no negative vote, the positive vote is not so important; but once you get a negative vote, let it initializes this "neutralization" :) Then the author of the question or answer needs a support; he/she wants to know the views of other participants and the silence here is inappropriate...

ResearchGate is very useful for me first for the publications that can be seen here and second to get in touch with researchers. I consider most important the publication list and the possibility to download the papers. To interact with other researchers by questions - answers is also interesting and in the benefit of all people involved.

Valentina, it is interesting for me how you "get in touch with researchers" after you have not asked questions and you have only three answers? Maybe there are some other RG possibilities to connect researchers? Please, share your experience... Regards, Cyril

When you are on the page of a researcher you have right side the option - "Send message" and so it is very easy to write him directly and to ask something related to the research you are interested in.

Ljubomir and friends, this matter concerning up and down votes is quite mysterious. I just give you one example:

I got a notification that 2 persons (Hendra Syarifuddin and Mark Gould) upvoted my question 'Students who write in English have to be careful that they don't plagiarize, but cite and re-phrase in their own words. But what if they translate?'. But when I checked, I found there was 1 downvote. So I sent a message to Community Support asking about this. Almost immediately the notification disappeared!! I didn't go back to check with the 2 persons. I am too busy with my students and don't have time for these things. Like most of you, I have to put my priorities in the right place!

Concerning people who down-vote things they DON'T understand, or consider of NO significance, let me just suggest kindly that those things are NOT for you. They are for other RG members who have the heart and concern to know its significance. Besides, the questioner already has some idea about the question and (possible) answers, and may NEED to test if own ideas are on track.

What an interesting discussion we have here. I think this is what RG is all about... connecting us and no matter what you (your ideas) represents, the thing is we have one common trait to share with, that is, open-mindedness. Now reading the posts of my fellows I felt obliged to share mine. I have not been active recently due to the calamity that hit our place. 50% of houses were blown. Internet is down. Total black-out in our area. But even during the time that I can actively participate in RG discussion, I have very few minutes I can allot to RG also. In short, I am not that active. Had I have enough time and I think I can devote more time in answering posts and stuff. I love reading posts of my colleagues and I feel elated when I receive Upvotes but I have not received down votes so far. I think it will turn me down, too. I have not increased my score recently but it is just fair with me because I have not been very active lately. So to sum it up, ladies and gentlemen, please keep on doing your RG activity. I salute and respect you guys.

Ljubomir, I am not affiliated with a university, and have few resources and yet have ideas perhaps beyond my station so I use Researchgate to test and extend my ideas, seek interst and gather kudos against the possibilty I can do more with my ideas in the public realm in the future. So far I have found it a delightful pasttime with added benefits as I described above. Access to interesting resources is a bonus.

Miranda, I just read your post. I don't know if itis related, but working on a small tablet, my fingers occasionally hit up vote twice and I have to correct, so the possibility exists that people like me with big fingers and small tablets, make mistakes and the mistakes are carried through rather than corrected. Maybe??

Dear Dr. Cyril Mechkov, We all agree with the aim and objective of creation of RG. Each of us are beneficiaries of RG and no one can deny for the fact that this is an excellent platform where we researchers interact.

This question is valid until the feedback is coming else there is no validity for this question.

Any system needs feedback to improve. RG is a new system with many feedbacks and taking corrective measure RG will be much more transparent to its members.

It seems to me - there are some symptoms that indicate this - that actively participates in the life of RG unfortunately a small portion from the approximately three million registered researchers.

Now the second issue: What me mostly worry?

The most worries me, is that recognized scientific authorities do not want to register, or - if they are already registered in RG - are limited to passively added to your profile publications collected by the RG, and they are not willing to participate in creative discussions .

I think it's a big loss for RG and for us - that is, those who are actively trying to live in this portal.

A matter of interest to me and many others is the question of co-authorship. In the more theoretical subjects the number of-coauthors is usually very small, from zero to two or three. In areas requiring many collaborators in complex experiments, such

as medicine, chemistry, physics, etc, how does one establish the relative contributions of the many co-authors?

I ask this, because I was on the Senate committee which, de facto, determined promotions; we were very hard put to answer this question. The other interesting question which arose often was how to account for a single publication, often

very brief, resulting in credit for many authors.

What happened to me recently was that someone (some 'researcher') complained to RG about my post. It could be that this person misunderstood my intention, but why didn't they confront me when I am so accessible? The effect of this action is that I can't be so trusting anymore. I like very much the fact that every one add here to this discussion a piece of true. Young researchers can learn from the experience of older ones. It is very important to have time to read the conversation.

I'd have to say that, overall, I've been impressed. While I'm sure that there are a great many folks on RG who are not terrifically active, within a few days of setting up an account I had multiple people initiating interactions with me. I've been on similar sites (e.g., LinkedIn) but I have not seen this type of interaction. I'm still trying to figure out precisely what the value of a resource like RG is and how much involvement makes sense - while I'm enjoying the interactions, getting some interesting thoughts, ideas, and perspectives from others, I still wonder how much is naval gazing/playing as opposed to constructing genuine relationships and sowing the seeds of future research activities.

I fully agree with this, and so, the more I regret that a large crowd of those very experienced researchers do not yet joined us. We can say that there is nothing to regret, because we are and we want to help. However, there is an old saying "two heads are better than one". If we were 3-4 times more on ResearchGATE, the young scientists would have 3-4 times greater chance of effective assistance.

The growing importance of technological literacy in the workplace makes it increasingly important for us to provide value to more of our students in all streams.

To make much more active our students in their respective fields, it is necessary that "Introductory courses are often designed for the prospective professional with many topics treated superficially to provide a context for later study, and with an emphasis on mathematical manipulations and structures. These mathematical structures may later serve as a framework for building a strong and well-organized understanding of the subject in which concepts and knowledge structure are tightly woven into the mathematics."

For simple questions asked by young researchers, when I see that the seniors supply the required answers, I sometimes have a mixed feeling in the sense that when I was young, no such system was available! ResearchGate is really very useful for young researchers. However, in certain basic questions, some of those who take part behave very rudely. That is not good.

Not bad, more than 5 answers a day! @Andrzej gave the diagnosis, @G. Leittman have confirmed it. Most of us have agreed that ResearchGate is our scientific platform. We should encourage our young coleagues to join it, to improve their presence on RG, not to avoid to ask whatever they need, to search for answers, to fight for knoledge...,...etc. They will enjoy full attention and the help of us, their colleagues!

Sometimes, some young researchers ask for suggestions regarding what books they should read to understand some particular topics. For example, there is a question in ResearchGate regarding 'good book on linear algebra'. In fact, ResearchGate is not just for discussions related to researches. All sorts of matters related to studies in every branch of knowledge are asked. It is a very nice platform to share knowledge.

Moreover, RG provides an integrated global with unlimited opportunities.

Congratulations and thanks all of you. I am one of the inexperienced researchers and I benefit from all our communication on RG. I agree with you fully .

I am also a supporter of action on two fronts :

1. Our grassroots action (the users ResearchGATE ), to promotes the portal among our friends researchers

2. Institutional action provided by "board" of ResearchGATE.

While in the first case, the organization is quite easy - it requires only our initiative , without financial resources, whereas institutional actions - if they are to be on a larger scale - require financial outlays.

In another topic I have written about the fact that I dream about a form of publishing activities by the ResearchGATE - perhaps even at the level of good scientific journal (or even series of magazines).

I think that the advertised information about meeting RessarchGate "board" with Bill Gates some time ago, may give hope, that in the close term ResearchGATE become really active institution in the field of science - not only capable of boast activity of its members, but also institutional activity.

I think RG is a very valid instrument. I use it not so much for time reasons, but i will use it more often. I hope it will also boast institutional activity, and hopefully be able to merge/coordinate didactic and research issues.

I have observed one important point. Those who take part actively, actually take part in all sorts of discussions, from mathematics to philosophy.

I am member from the beginning. It bridges researchers of not only like interset but also varieties of activities going on globally.

Research Gate is a great relief particularly for the workers belonging to the third world. One can remain abreast with the things happening in the frontiers of science, one can calibrate oneself, set goals to do better research. Moreover, sometimes we hardly get a co-feeler to share our minds,curiosities and crisis. RG is no doubt a nice platform to feel the rhythm of the contemporary circles belonging to different parts of the world- a brilliant innovation to strengthen the morale of those who like to believe themselves as the 'citizens of the world'.

I hope COMMUNITY SUPPORT can do something to people who intend to CHEAT THE RG SYSTEM. Your question also had a downvote, although all of us with the right mindset know and appreciate its value. This was Dr Afaq's message to me:

Thanks for summarizing and highlighting the issue.The RG is no doubt it is an excellent platform. System cant be called as perfect system. In our control engineering we use terms feedback control, error, compensator, obervability, controllability. Some of these terms need self restrains and that apply to us while we are linked with RG.

Thanks Dr Afaq. I also reported on my thread concerning teacher evaluation. You can read it on that thread. Perhaps RG already has a mechanism to reduce the score of those members who are negative, refuse to contribute positively to the whole RG community, who knows? In any community, it's not just the intellectual ability and skills, but also the moral integrity that's important. We do not meet, but we still must understand and TRUST one another, agree?

The most important thing in ResearchGate is that we discuss not just about researches here, but about both research and teaching.
