I am trying to measure the optical properties (refractive index and extinction coefficient) of graphene oxide (GO). I have read some papers where people have used different methods (ellipsometry, phase contrast to name a few) to find the optical properties of GO. But what is the main motivation behind measuring the optical properties of GO? I know optical properties are central to the performance of GO, but still its not so clear to me.
I would really appreciate if anyone shares his/her idea/opinion in this regard.

Main motivation of measuring the optical properties is for analysis purposes. Say you want to design a solar cell in which you want to use graphene oxide. You can simulate the structure in software and can observe the effect without fabricating the device :) It will save your resource and money. We find it for the data for any type of material, to make the robust material system.

The main motivation behind getting the optical properties of graphene oxide is study how the presence of oxygen functionalities in GO affect the optical parameters. It would help in tuning the material for specific applications.
