I am planning to do numerical modeling to know the best shape of a handheld mixer with baffle plates to mix water with a gel homogeneously at the least possible time. However, I am new to numerical modeling.
Could someone guide me in the below questions?
1. What characteristics of the mix should I consider to determine the mixture is homogeneous?
2. What are some of the free tools available to do the modeling in this case?
Any input in this regard would be invaluable.

Hi Karthika,
I have read before here in RG that this kind of mix is a challenging problem. However, In lab to test performance of the liquid mixer (degree of homogeneity), probably colorimetric test is the best option (please double check), a suitable image processing could be carried out using tools like MATLAB or any other software e.g. imageJ, to calculate the standard deviation/covariance of the pixel values in the mixing zone. An uniform homogeneity would be assured when these statistical parameters fall within the desired accuracy limit e.g. 0.05 - 0.01 (95%-99% homogeneity).

One idea that might both solve and create a new problem (since much scientific and numerical inquiry, but not all, operates from the basis of knowable outcomes so it's not 'pure' research in this sense) is not the calculate anything, mix stuff up that might no logically cohere in thus producing heterogeneity or perhaps even an androgynous or even hermaphrodite 'outcome' or perhaps none of the aforementioned. The point is to try something new since it might produce a truly unanticipated reaction and that's what science should be about—making mistakes that lead to better outcomes and inventions. Hope this idea is not too strange but you never know!
