We need to purchase a new inverted microscope for our tissue culture facility, and have narrowed down the choice to the Nikon TS100f or the Olympus CKX41. Does anyone have any preferences, or pros and cons for either model?
Nikon microscope are good and their performance is time tested. I had worked in three National Labs of India. All we had their is only Nikon. I donot have the experience of Olympus
In balance, I would say it comes down to what gives you the most bang for your buck. Both Nikon and Olympus are reputable microscope companies that sell high quality equipment. I suggest that you also take into account after-market support, which is also important post-acquisition and essentially comes down to the quality and knowledge of their customer service representatives.
Hi! In case you have a stock of infinity corrected objectives from Zeiss or Leica, Olympus could be a better choise, while it has the same thread as the other two and you can use objectives on all the microscopes (this applies for mordern, infinity corrected ones). Nikon has its own thread, so it is compatible only to Nikon objectives. If you have none, than this is not an issue. In genneral they are about the same, Oly might be a tiny bit smaller and takes less space on the table as Nik. Both could be equipped with extra light source for observing fluorescence; Oly has it with Me-hydride lamp -> long lifetime, possibilty to regulate the intensity (though in Nik's Intency-light there are just ND filters for the same reason). To my taste Nik is more pleasant to operate, plus it has the possibility not only to install the camera but also the stand-alone monitor for it - no need for extra computer or even laptop... Most likely you know all of it.
All in all, if you have enough money to get what you want and cannot decide - call both companies, ask them to bring the microscope for test with all the equipment you want and then decide based on your own personal estetic preferences as long as the quality they deliver is of a very high standard. Good luck.
