I'm working on understanding the naming convention associated with molecular vibrations for Infrared and Raman spectroscopy. I noticed some label each vibration with the letter nu and an integer subscript counting the modes as well as a subscript "s" or "as" for symmetric and asymmetric modes. However, in recent papers, I'm seeing the use of letters I cannot find reference to anywhere that describes the meaning. For example, some modes are given by beta(CCH). I'm sure the CCH correspondes to a bond of the form C-C-H, but what is the beta referring to and where can I find this? There are similar things for the letters gamma, delta, chi, rho, and phi. Of these, phi is used differently notationally. For example, there are plenty of examples of things of the form delta(COH) or rho(CH), but phi always shows up at the end of the bond information: e.g. chi(CCCC)phi or gamma(CCC)phi.

Does anyone know of good resources for deciphering this notation?
