In relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, is there any evidence that lesions or plaques in the brain can reduce in size once formed? I understand some function can be regained due to neural re-wiring, but based on MRI images alone do we ever see lesions appearing to shrink?
Thank you Dr Schneider, that was a very quick answer. Would the lesions shrinking be an indication that the brain was repairing itself- or is this just the pattern of lesion development?
What I am wondering is, whether any of the modern immunosupressant therapies could be impeding the brains ability to regenerate. Inflammatory signals play an important part in summoning endogenous neural stem cells to the necessary regions, but if inflammation is inhibited to prevent disease proggression it might limit this phenomenon.
This study was in 1989, so presumably the patients were not on any MS-specific treatments. Is there any indication that the effect observed in this study lessens when the patients are taking immunosuppressants?

Once lesion is developed the possibility of recovering the damage by shrinkage of that is hardly anything because in case autoimmune disease the damage is permanent .
So any decrease in lesion or shrinkage will not be significant with respect to recovery
