I have seen an interesting phenomenon in regards to mitochondrial gene expression and was interested in quantifying mitochondria. I have seen a few different ways, but wanted to get some advice. Thanks!
For mitochondrial number, the best proxys are citrate synthase and cardiolipin content... On the other hand, mitochondrial Dna copy is actually a poor marker of mitochondrial density (see Larsen et al. 2012:http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1113/jphysiol.2012.230185/full).
As said, citrate synthase is a good proxy for quantifying mitochondrial number. But as this enzyme is also found in peroxisomes, how reliable it will be AS A PROXY?
