Most DNA fingerprinting studies are performed using minisatellite markers. Microsatellites are also very useful for DNA fingerprinting, and they have the further advantage that they are readily analysed using PCR and locus specific primers complementary to sequences flanking the repeat region.
Microsatellites or the Short Tandem repeats (STRs) are the basis of DNA fingerprinting today. Before 1990s Minisatellites were used but as these were longer, prone to degradation, the focus shifted to STRs which gives satisfactory amplification for DNA fingerprinting.
