ACE2 does help in the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into human cells. And previous animal studies show that ACE inhibitors and ARBs upregulates ACE2 expression. This effect could increase risk for or severity of COVID-19. Meanwhile, some researchers hypothesize that ACE inhibitors and ARBs could benefit patients with COVID-19 through various mechanisms. E.g ACE2 converts angiotensin 2 to angiotensin 1–7, that has beneficial anti inflammatory properties, by upregulating ACE2 either ACE inhibitors or ARBs, could enhance this process.
