Working on a project currently that requires the use of an anionic dye. Many of the ones I have found are quite expensive - on the order of $200 for 5g (sulfrhodamine etc). Do you guys have some advice for some that I could find? Thanks.
Hi Prudvi, ask the companies for a small free sample that you can test in your system.
Most companies will be happy to oblige because they expect you to order more at their price if the experiments work.
At least the companies will offer you a 20-25% discount on their reagents if you ask.
Does it have to be fluorescent? How much do you need?
I don't think you can find a fluorescent dye that is less expensive than fluorescein (100 g for $28 from Sigma), which is anionic (-1) at neutral pH.
If you need an anionic fluorescent dye that is more charged than fluorescein, try 5- and 6-carboxyfluorescein (-2 at neutral pH), which costs $171 for 5 g from Thermo-Fisher.
Hydroxypyrene trisulfonate (HPTS or pyranine) is a trivalent anionic fluorescent dye (1 g for $143 from Thermo-Fisher).
If all you need is an anionic dye, many dyes used in food coloring are anionic (sulfonates). I can't imagine these would be expensive.
