The reason we did that little study is because there wasn't much in the literature about prevalence of plantar calcaneal spurs in the general population. To be honest I expected that the prevalence would be the same in both groups. The increased prevalence of spurs in the group attending my outpatient clinic may simply reflect referral bias - i.e. if the patient has a spur on XR they are more likely to get referred for a surgical opinion. Even though we never operate on them!
In this MRI study in asymptomatic volunteers, a calcaneal spur was detected in 15 of the 77 volunteers (19%):
