Yes you can but with some care. Area sources may include buoyancy sources (like residential heating) that have a non-zero release height, sou you have to estimate that before running the model. Transport sources are also ubiquitous área sources and road turbulence also implies a non zero release height for those large sources. The ideal setting is to have some air quality measurements to validate your area source modeling exercise.
