although it has nothing to do with a biogegraphic region, but what about  'berber' to indicate northern african (mostly Maroccan) origin or perhaps the berber general 'Tarik' who conquered spain and gave his name to Gibraltar (=mountain of Tarik). Or another suggestion the spanish province of 'Andalusia' or the mediterranean part between Spain and Marocco known as 'Alboran sea'

That's the region of the Pillars of Hercules, from which you could derive a name. Alternatively, you could base the name on the Strait of Gibraltar. Sea strait, my Latin dictionary tells me, is Fretum or Freto. If not already used it would be perfectly short.

You can use Ibero-Magrebinian.

If there is no short name, you can make a new one. For example: Ibluma. Of course this is short for Iberia-Lusitania-Morroco

Thank you for all your suggestions. We discussed in our group to use the term "Mauro-". Would this be wrong? I will probably not use the name of a general for a peaceful grasshopper, but "Berber-" or "Alboro-" are also quite nice suggestions.

I am more with Carlos Martins, in Spain there would be little doubt about naming that región as 'Ibero-Magrebian' or something similar. I think that in English the correct spelling is 'Maghreb'.

So I would suggest 'maghreboiberica/us' or 'iberomaghrebica/us' or similar -ensis / -ense.

Similar epithets based on 'mauretanicus' might apply because Mauretania was in the past used for one part of what is now Morocco; however it might be misleading since in present days Mauritania is a different country, located southwards of that región...

What about Perialborania? from "peri-" (greek for around) and "Alboran Sea". Or Betorifia? from "Betic" (southern Iberian Peninsula) and "Rif" (northern Morocco) areas. The first is more sound, but both may fit the main distribution areas.

Biogeographically there's a strong conection with tingitan region and aljibic and algarvian sectors...including Monchiquense District...in several matters...potential natural vegetation, vicarious sintaxa, several taxa, etc...From a evolutionary point of view and biogeographically strictly speaking, and despite the awfull and large name of Tigitan-Onubo-Algarvian Province...He is the more correct one, I think....You should avoid general and prosaic senses and names...if you want technical and strict ones.

I think that the term Mauro sounds nice, as you already said and that nice comparison between our species and Moors can be derived and presented in the 'Etymology' part of the paper.

Well the main key is the both sides of the strait, therefore Herculeum is a good option,

Betic-riffian tectonic region does not include the portugeese side nor  but surely is the key tectonic reason for what you have found,

In  old roman times  we have Lusitania,Baetic and tingitanian provinces  comprising the distribution you refer to so why not to amalgamate them in " Tin/bae/lus".   Or Betingia from Betis and tingitania...

 You may also want to search and consider this names Cynetes/Turdetani/Buquata

Now before the Romans the South Iberian region was actually not Iberian but Tartesian/Tartessos and it included  the Portugeese Algarve,and most andalusian provinces...

So we have a good name for the Spanish portugeese side to join to the northAfrican Atlas  side  Altlantotarteso

It can be used the term "betico-maghrebi", which includes the south of the Iberian Peninsula and the region of Maghreb (north of Morocco). I think it is the best option.

thanks for all these suggestions. We will discuss them in our team, but we will certainly pick a short term, because we still want to add the grasshopper term at the end... So Beticomaghrebi... would probably be too long. Herculeo... and Tartesio.. would probably also work

Betico-maghrebi is a term already used for some faunistic elements showing such distribution. I think this should be taken in mind in order to avoid mistakes.

I'm not a biogeographer, but the term "bético-maghrebi" may be correct, because there are some endemic elements (of flora and fauna) from this area and "bético" refers to the extreme south of Andalusia, mainly linked to the Betic massifs. If the plants or animals are exclusive from the south of Spain and only the extreme north of Morocco, "bético-rifeño" is a good option, as Rif is the name of the region which covers the north of Morocco.

Betic is a roman latin name; Magreb is an Arabic name, both terms coming form different centuries....mixing different cultures, times and languages is not clever, I prefer using all latin names or ,all greek names or all Arabic nams or all spanish names!!!!!! that makes sense.

The again Betico rifenyo  is a geographic tern for both mountain ranges which indeed have the same origin.

Ok - I agree with David that this discussion can carry on forewer...

However, we are just talking about a genus name and not a biogeographic textbook or whatever. Genera names can be derived from whatever we want and there are many scientific names of species or genera, which mix different languages. Many names of species or genera are not perfect - and some have even nothing to do with the morphology, ecology or distribution of the species. For me, one important thing is that the name should not be to long. Otherwise it will become difficult to pronounce. This is why Beticomaghrebi- or Beticorifenyo- are really not the best choice, even if they probably fit very well with the range of the species (even though one might argue that the southern Portuguese populations of the species would not be covered).

I already mentioned that we also have to add a term for the grasshopper group, we are talking about. I will not tell you the details here, but let's just think about it with an example (I use here "hippus" even though we will use a different term): Maurohippus sounds much better than Beticorifenyohippus or Beticomaghrebihippus. Herculeohippus is also quite long and it might lead to the erroneous conclusion that we are talking about a very large or tough species. Tartesiohippus sounds ok, but probably does not cover the N African part.

If you are just looking for a simple noun expressing occurrence on either side of the Gibraltar Strait, you might consider "Transfretia", across the strait [of Gibraltar]. Note that I did not check for a possible earlier homonym, though! If there is, you might still add your favourite hippus and use Transfretiohippus; a bit long, and a Latin-Greek chimaera, but it conveys a nice impression of a horse jumping across.

Thank you Enrique. Yes, I know about this concept, and I remember that some colleagues used this method. But I am not sure how many people would be willing to pay for a name (given the millions of undescribed species...). And I also prefer to give a name that has something to do with the species - or I would name it in honour of a colleague or friend. In any case, I would more likely use a name of a person, if it was a species epitheton rather than the genus name. By the Way: Werner, I like your suggestion. I will ask our co-authors...
