Is the UK Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery the equivalent of an American MD?

It is my impression that undergraduate courses in Medicine are, dependent on the country where the study takes place, either described as bachelor or doctoral degrees. I this is so, is a British MD different from an American MD? I am confused.
