When wheat crop after rice, is planted on time the residual soil moisture is sufficient for initiation of wheat seed or residual soil moisture is less, it is advised to seed at relatively less moisture content at shallow depth and then immediately apply a light irrigation. Avoid pre sowing irrigation as this helps weeds to germinate ahead of the main crop. But if weeds are not problem and there is time for seeding pre sowing irrigation can be applied in no- till system but may delay planting in tilled situations by several days.
Usually but not necessarily, the field after harvest of early rice varieties (of 120 days duration) have sufficient moisture that should support good germination of wheat sown through zero tillage practice. Moisture depletion is a common feature after harvest of medium or late duration rice. Applying light irrigation before sowing allows pre-sowing weed control and better establishment, but reduces sowing time flexibility. Dry sowing (applying irrigation after sowing) reduces options for weed control but improves water use efficiency and sowing time flexibility. However, it needs further validation.
