Within biochar soil amendment literature, I have observed much discussion about positive and negative priming of soil organic carbon. Is there evidence that enhanced breakdown of natural soil organic carbon is beneficial for plant growth? Is increased microbial activity in soil beneficial for plant growth?

Soil organic carbon contributes to improve soil porosity, structure, aeration and water infiltration. In addition, it helps to determine the structure of microbial communities that interact with plants and achieve substantial benefits such as nutrient and water capture, protection against pests, etc. These attributes also add significant contributions to soil fertility, nutrient cycling, stability, water retention and productivity.
