I read so many reports where it is mentioned that sometimes it happen that plasmodium is left in the liver without being affected by the drug regimen and then suddenly it reappears.
Some Plasmodium species form hypnozoites, which are dormant forms of the parasite in the liver, that can be reactivated months or even years (decades!) after the first episode of the disease. This is the case of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale.
