I think it depends on the kind of work one does, and also the stage of the work. For instances, for a work that is like automated or monotonous and repetitive, a good rhythmic music would be great. This is base on my experience in making drawings and models, etc., as an architect on computer aided design software. On the other hand, when one is doing research or serious reading with the intend to discover something, music or any noise can be distracting. The second scenario is base on my experience as a researcher. Also, even while doing some work such as designing, there are stages where good music is nice, but at some stages, it can be distracting.
effectiveness of "listening to music while working" depends on the person's mood. I myself love music and l do most of my daily occupations with music. but I think it doesn't work in analytical works or actions that a deep focus is needed.
