I am reviewing a manuscript and was wondering if this was a major experimental flaw. Among the eight publications, three used protein, three used RNA, and two used DNA. Apparently, if the publications using protein (or others) were included, the publications were not enough to carry out meta-analysis. So they wanted to make sure that the eight publications were included.
You don't say what the pubs were about so there is no way to judge how comparable the 8 pubs are. HTH. David Booth

The eight pepers might be interdependent, that is, the RNA might be dependent on the DNA, and the protein might in turn be dependent on the RNA, as that is the direction of flow of genetic information. I suggest performing Factor Analysis first, to see the interdependence of the variables, and if found to be indeed interdependent, to eliminate the dependent ones. When performing Multivariate Analysis, the assumption is the independent variables are independent of each other, generally (with some exceptions in very special cases).
