What are the specifics with the group? If the children are developing their language, the improvisation could function in a "call and response" type setting whereby the children are learning the functions of appropriate communication: taking turns, asking questions and waiting for responses, etc.
Yes! And i would add, quoting Azzara, that personification, spontaneity, anticipation, prediction, interaction, and being in the moment are key elements of improvisation. Do you know the work of Edwin Gordon, Richard Grunow and Christopher Azzara? They say that improvisation in music is the spontaneous expression of meaningful musical ideas-it is analogous to conversation in language. So, it is not only useful but fundamental to musical development.
Thanks Virginia and Ubirajara! The children actually range from 0-3 years old, so each dyad may come with different goals. I mainly investigate the use of improvisation in the group and its possibility to increase interactions between parents and children. I've found many music groups that emphasise on singing (nursery rhymes or pre-composed songs). Although improvisation offers positive elements (as Ubijara mentioned above), the lack of exploration in doing it within this population has made me wonder if it's worth to further investigate.
