Our column is a VF-1ms (GC-MS, Varian), we want to know if it is better to change it for a VF-5ms (or equivalent). We wish to analyse hydrocarbons (PAHs, n-alkanes, FAMES, etc.), as well general pesticides.
As you know VF-5 is about 5% more polar than VF-1 . If VF-5 is available in your lab, it is better to use it for pesticides. We could separate about 13 OPPs in VF-5 column. For FAMES it is better to use more polare column such as CP-SIL19-CB. For n-alkanes VF-1 is suitable.
We do analyse more that 300 pesticides using Agilent DB-1701 column (30 mx0.25 mm ) by Agilent GC/MS. If you want to analyse full range of FAMES (around 46 compounds ), supelco SP 2560 (100mx0.25 mm ) does better job in separation.
