I wanted to give Cholecaliciferol (vitamin D) dissolved in ethanol orally to Wistar rats aged 5 to 6 months. Majority of the research articles suggests Subcutaneous route however I would like to know if it is possible to administer it orally. if yes, how much will the animal tolerate ?
Why should you use ethanol, being not a natural food and maybe even hazardous for your animals at high concentration.
It is common to dissolve vit D in edible oils, that works perfectly. Check the ingredients of vit D in capsules, you will find under ingredients the type of oil used. I noticed for example olive oil as carrier of vit D.

Since I am working on Cardiovascular Biology, I cannot use edible oils such as olive oil, sesame oil or peanut oil as they have some kind of impact on heart. Also, I'm planning to procure cholecalciferol from sigma wherein they have mentioned that it is soluble in ethanol.
You can use any kind of fat or edible oil. What do you feed your rats?
In addition to mixing vitD in ethanol with their food, you could also buy commercial vitD pills , powder them and mix them with the rats food.
Of course you should measure the exact content of the pill, since it is common use to put a surplus in them. Succes
