I realize it is financially difficult, especially as a student, to conduct and disseminate research. Nevertheless, there is something irrationale about professors such that they spend their own limited funds to pursue, present, and publish their research. I suppose that is the epitomy of passion.
Of course that is perfectly normal to do research and having motivation for it, even if you do not have enough resources! Your research could contribute without participate in an international congress. Beside, is there any personal satisfaction in doing research? For me, it is also important. Regards.
I've been 20 years in Research. Still have not attended a single International Congress. It does't bother me alt all. That is not the motivation for my work.
Personal satisfaction is a key driving force behind research. Dissemination and interaction is a key - after all one needs constructive criticism to move forward, and collaboration to be more efficient and naturally to create a pleasurable working environment. However platforms like this one and many others tend to bridge a gap created by limited funding - just imagine how you could communicate, share and get access to research from your peers 20 years ago. Enjoy your work, and enjoy the benefits of technology and existing platforms. And have fun doing it :)
Yes. It is normal to do research and to walk with empty pockets. In my twenties, I attended several conferences, but never participated in meals and excursions.
Yes, it is normal. Things are tough and, as time passes, become tougher for the majority of researchers, concerning the question. But, I consider that ''When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it.''
First, why do you think that participation in an international congress is compulsory for demonstrating your scientific results. For example, Grigory Perelman published his famous scientific result on the "Poincare Hypothesis" on the Internet and even gave up a million dollars. Let this be a good example for you. Secondly, most scientists are not properly funded and do their research absolutely free of charge. Why? Because this is the meaning of their life and nothing more. Thirdly, even if research is generously funded, it does not guarantee at all the expected scientific result and this should be well understood. Thus, first get your scientific result, and then try to convince the scientific community that your result is worthy of encouragement. And it would be better not to wait for the reaction of the public and just try to make a commercial product that has benefits for society. If this works for you, then people will appreciate your product and you will get what you would like to receive - recognition and money. Good luck!
I understand your feelings. International recognition is of course important to one's research and, more in general, it occurs many times to feel frustrated and lacking motivations in a world (and the world of research makes no exception) that is becoming more and more competitive, even if one has enough funding and can travel the world. But all in all, think about the fact that we're lucky enough to be able to do a wondeful job, which we are really passionate about! Not everyone shares the same luck. Just be aware that many conferences offer specific discounts or bursaries for PhD students or researchers from specific countries. I saw you presenting at the CMSS congress in Rabat and you did a very good job in front of an international audience. Keep un the good work and never give up!
Yes of course that is what we have been suffering in low developed countries. But as fundings and recognition generally follow hard work this should be your main motivation.
