It is just normal to appreciate those who have helped you in one way or the other during the course of your PhD research journey. I am pretty sure that your accomplishments were not achieved by your power alone but by leaning on the shoulders of giants! Therefore, it is highly imperative to appreciate those giants whose shoulders you had leaned.
In my opinion, it's compulsory, because it's show how you appreciate your advisor or funding agency that gave much help to let your research running well. You can't do/achieve it alone right? :)
It is compulsory to write the acknowledgement section in a PhD thesis as you could not have completed your research work without any form of assistance or support.
in my opinion, The acknowledgement it is most important of the thesis, because the completion of writing the thesis would not been possible without the support and encouragement of several special people as my families, my friends and my supervisor.
