I previously posted about "Research into the institutional abuse and neglect of people in residential care outside the UK" and had a limited response. I would like to further explore and develop my experiences to date.
I have found a number of research papers about abuse and neglect in care homes, group homes, residential care and hospitals from a number of countries but academic searches using the term "institutional abuse" do not yield many (if any) directly relevant results.
The term is widely used to relate to abuses of elderly people that are a result of the organisational culture and practice, possibly condoned or encouraged by management, as opposed to abuse by a specific individual.
Does anyone outside the UK have any sources they can direct me to or views/opinions that might be relevant? For example, in the US would such abuses be dealt with via class actions or state legislature? What would be the response to such cases in other parts of Europe? Is there a tendency for such abuses to be seen as unavoidable?
