Over the last few years I followed the debate about the frontiers journals. I noticed that the reception seems to vary wildly depending on the field. While some parts of the frontiers group seem to be more predatory, other are well received in their field. As I could not really find a pattern in what fields frontiers is reliable, I wanted to ask for opinions about the frontiers journals in the field of hydrology. Several hydrological researchers I think highly of have published in frontiers. So, what are your experiences as editor, reviewer and author with frontiers journals in the field of hydrology (I think the most fitting are probably Frontiers in Environmental Science, Frontiers in Water and Frontiers in Earth Science)?

No personal experience but looking at the facts one can see that:
-Frontiers in Environmental Science has a decent impact factor (2.749) by being indexed in SCIE, indexed by Scopus (CiteScore 4.4)
-Frontiers in Earth Science has a decent impact factor (2.689) by being indexed in SCIE, indexed by Scopus (CiteScore 3.3)
-Both member of COPE
-Member of DOAJ (often seen as whitelist for open access journals)
Only drawback is that both journals ask pretty hefty fees (2490 and 2950 USD respectively). Some may benefit from their Frontiers Institutional Membership or Frontiers Fee Support program.
Purely based on extent of indexing and memberships I think these journals are a safe choice.

It is , provided you have money to pay the staggering publishing charges ..simply unaffordable...
No personal experience though, but I think they do, however, it is not free of charge to published in frontiers journal. Another option is to send the frontiers journal a mail for more clarification. Good luck.
ye, the costs are quite high, even compared to APC of other open access journals.
I published in Frontiers in Earth Science. I had a good experience with the reviewing phase: useful input from reviewers, good timing for publishing even with three rounds of reviews. The donwside is that it's very expensive.
