I want to culture green algae of freshwater , Is F/2 Media work for freshwater green algae culture with pH 7 - 8 ??? F/2 media is suitable for rapid , fast growth of green algae (Freshwater) ????
The optmal media depends strongly on the species, I agree with Oden Liran: for mixotrophic species like Chlamydomonas, TAP is a good choice, but other species might have other requirements: habv a look at Andersons book: http://www.elsevier.com/books/algal-culturing-techniques/andersen/978-0-12-088426-1.
Please refer the book "Algal Culturing Techniques" edited by Robert Andersen and you can have wide choice of culture media. However, apart from choice of medium you need to standardise the optimal requirement for your species by some experimentation.
The details regarding the book can be found at http://www.elsevier.com/books/algal-culturing-techniques/andersen/978-0-12-088426-1
Since F/2 is a rich media like BG11 or BBM, I think it is appropriate to use for freshwater algae as well but along with the right ingredients of trace elements for freshwater and definitely the right pH, just as you modify your BBM / BG11. However, you have to try and test it because every species may or may not adapt well to this media. So, you need to standardise the optimal requirements for the species or genera that you need to grow in it.
F/2 medium will be suitable for growing freshwater green algae because the medium contains adequate nutrients needed for the algae such as macro elements, trace metals and vitamins. But what is needed here is constant supply of light and ensuring that the pH of the medium corresponds with the pH of the freshwater habitat for optimum growth of the algae.
